The Manawatu Region is in the south central region of the North Island, and is a very rich, intensely farmed region. The population of the Manawatu region is 222,500, representing 5.5% of the total New Zealand population and is the 6th largest in size for New Zealand. Palmerston North is the region’s main urban centre with the well established Massey University, research institutes, and thriving manufacturing and agribusiness sectors each contributing to this region’s economic strength. The climate in this region is mild-temperate with temperatures ranging from 14 to 23 degrees Celsius during the summer months and 6-13 degrees Celsius during the winter months.
Industries in the Manawatu Region include education and research, beef, deer and sheep farming, agribusiness, education, health, manufacturing and defence. Regional highlights include Massey University, Te Manawa Art Gallery, the New Zealand Rugby Museum in Palmerston North and Whanganui National Park.
